The former lifeguard station sits in a prominent position above a beach on the Baltic Sea with long distance views across the bay of Kiel and the harbour created for the sailing events of the Olympic Games in 1972.

The clients ambition to turn it into a bar and kiosk required a larger footprint for indoor and outdoor seating and to increase its visibility along the coastline.

The proposed work combines the sideways extension of the lower floor with a striking canopy on the upper level, which acts as a focal point to attract customers from the promenade above the beach and covers a viewing platform

Insulated white render is combined with timber slats and a blue soffit to the canopy, which are visuals references to the wicker beach chairs on the beaches in the region.
